Welcome to Statistical Inference
Welcome to Statistical Inference¶
Statistical inference is an important concept to guide decision making – in particular, decisions about whether a particular hypothesis is supported by data.
Hypotheses are mainly concerened with propositions about a population, using sample data drawn from that population. We formalize the process to guide our decisions through the introduction of the hypothesis testing framework, which allows us to formally evaluate claims about the population. The specific hypothesis testing that we will discuss is also known as null hypothesis statistical testing (NHST).
Note
Statistical inference is the process through which inferences about a population are made based on certain statistics calculated from a sample of data drawn from that population.
Statistical inference can also be used to draw conclusions from model estimates.
